Carrd Tutorial: Complete Beginner Walkthrough (2026)

- This tutorial walks you through Carrd from first signup to publishing a finished, designed single-page site — covering templates, the editor, sections, elements, styling, settings, custom domain and analytics.
- Total time: about an hour for a polished page if you've never used Carrd before.
- You don't need design or coding skill. You'll need a Pro plan ($9–$19/year) only if you want forms, embeds or a custom domain — the free tier covers everything else.
What You'll Build
By the end of this tutorial you'll have a complete Carrd site with:
- A hero section with profile image, headline and subheadline.
- Three to five buttons linking to your destinations.
- A contact form (Pro feature) or email link (free).
- A footer with social icons and copyright.
- Custom colours, custom fonts and proper Open Graph metadata.
- Optionally: a custom domain.
Part 1: Setup (5 minutes)
Create your account
Sign up at carrd.co. You'll need email + password. Verify the email link before continuing.
Choose Free or Pro
Stay on the free plan for this tutorial. You can upgrade later (Pro Lite $9/year, Pro Standard $19/year). Pro is required for forms, third-party embeds and custom domains.
Part 2: Pick a Template (3 minutes)
Browse templates
From the dashboard tap + Build a site. The Profile and Landing categories are the most relevant for personal pages and link-in-bio replacements. Hover any template to preview.
For a first project, pick a simple Profile template — usually one image, one headline, two subheadlines and a few buttons. Templates with the most variety inside (multi-section, scroll-snap layouts) are harder to edit cleanly.
Part 3: The Editor — A Tour (5 minutes)
Once inside, the editor has four areas:
- Canvas (centre). Your live page. Click anything to select.
- Sidebar (left). Sections list. Carrd organises pages into sections; clicking a section selects everything inside it.
- Properties panel (right). When you select an element or a section, this panel shows its options — content, style, behaviour.
- Toolbar (top). Add elements, switch between desktop/mobile preview, access settings, publish.
A page is a stack of sections. Each section contains elements. To rearrange the page structure, drag sections in the left sidebar. To rearrange elements within a section, drag them on the canvas.
Part 4: Edit the Hero Section (10 minutes)
Replace the profile image
Click the profile image. In the right panel, tap Replace and upload your image (square, 400×400 minimum recommended). The image circular crop is automatic.
Replace the headline and subheadline
Click each text element to type new copy. Keep the headline to 3-5 words (your name or a short tagline) and the subheadline to one short sentence. Use the right-panel Style tab to adjust size, weight and alignment.
Edit the buttons
Click each button. In the right panel set the label (what visitors read) and the URL (where they go). For external links, paste full URLs starting with https://. For an email button, use mailto:you@example.com.
Part 5: Style the Page (15 minutes)
Click any empty canvas area to deselect, then open the Site Styles panel from the toolbar. Three settings change the look more than anything else:
- Background colour or image. Pick a single solid colour or a subtle gradient. Avoid busy photos behind text.
- Accent colour. One colour used by buttons and links. Pick one — not three. The most professional Carrd pages have a single bold accent.
- Fonts. Pick a heading font and a body font. Pro plans unlock the full Google Fonts library; free plans have a curated set. Two fonts max.
Find a Carrd or single-page site you admire and reverse-engineer its colour palette and typography. Three rounds of "what's the simplest version of what they did?" will get you 80% there.
Part 6: Add a Form (Pro Lite or higher, 5 minutes)
Insert a form element
From the toolbar tap + Element → Form. Carrd inserts a default email-capture form. In the right panel, configure the destination email (where submissions go) and the success message.
If you're on the free plan, skip this step or use a button with a mailto: link instead.
Part 7: Configure Site Settings (5 minutes)
Set page title, description and OG image
Toolbar → gear icon → General. Set:
- Title — what shows in the browser tab and search-engine results.
- Description — 150-160 characters of summary copy used by search engines.
- Sharing image — the picture that appears when your URL is pasted in social or messaging apps. 1200×630 pixels is ideal.
Part 8: Choose Your URL (2 minutes)
Free subdomain or custom domain
Settings → URL. On free, set your yourname.carrd.co subdomain. On Pro Lite or higher, connect yoursite.com by adding a CNAME record at your domain registrar (Namecheap, Cloudflare, etc.) pointing to Carrd.
Part 9: Publish (1 minute)
Hit Publish
Top-right corner. Carrd uploads to its CDN. Within seconds your site is live. Tap the URL to open it.
Part 10: Add Analytics (Pro Standard, 5 minutes)
Carrd has no native analytics. To track visits:
- Sign up for Google Analytics 4 (free), Plausible (~$9/month) or Cloudflare Web Analytics (free).
- Get the tracking snippet.
- In Carrd, add a Code embed element (Pro Standard or higher) and paste the snippet into the page header.
- Republish.
- Verify in your analytics dashboard within 24 hours.
Part 11: Promote Your Page
- Paste the URL into Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube bios.
- Add it to your email signature.
- Generate a QR code (Carrd has a built-in QR generator on Pro).
- Share once on each social platform with a clear "what's at this URL" caption.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does this tutorial take end to end?
About 60 minutes the first time, including time to find images and write copy. Future Carrd sites take 15-30 minutes once you know the editor.
Do I need a Pro plan to follow this tutorial?
No — the free plan covers every step except forms, third-party analytics embeds and custom domain. You can complete the tutorial on free and upgrade later.
What if I get stuck inside the editor?
Carrd has a help docs site at carrd.co/docs and an active community on Twitter / X (search "Carrd"). Most issues are mobile-layout questions or DNS troubleshooting for custom domains.
Can I switch templates after I've started?
Not directly — Carrd doesn't have a "swap template" feature. You'd start a new site from the new template and copy your content across.
Does Carrd save my work automatically?
Yes — every change auto-saves to draft. Publishing is a separate, explicit step.
Can I undo a change?
The editor has Undo (Cmd/Ctrl+Z) for the current session. There is no version history beyond that — once you close the tab, the undo stack resets.
- A complete Carrd site takes about an hour to build the first time, 15-30 minutes thereafter.
- One accent colour, two fonts, four buttons — the simplest pages are usually the best.
- Forms, embeds and custom domains require Pro Lite or Pro Standard ($9–$19 per year).
- For pages that need analytics, scheduling or e-commerce out of the box, evaluate purpose-built link-in-bio tools and creator suites.
